Researchers at Uber's artificial intelligence laboratory have achieved a long-standing milestone in AI research by developing an algorithm that, with human assistance, achieved record-breaking scores in the notoriously difficult Atari games Pitfall! and Montezuma's Revenge. The achievement, detailed in a blog post and reported by MIT Technology Review, marks a significant step in the field of reinforcement learning, where AI systems learn by interacting with their environment and seeking rewards.
Reinforcement learning has enabled AI to excel in games like Super Mario Bros., where incremental rewards—such as collecting coins or defeating enemies—are readily available. However, Pitfall! and Montezuma's Revenge present a unique challenge: they offer sparse and delayed rewards, making it difficult for AI to learn the sequential steps needed to increase a score. Previous attempts, even those using algorithms designed to explore randomly, failed to make meaningful progress.
The new algorithm, developed by Uber's team, incorporates a memory component that allows it to learn from past attempts more effectively than earlier models. This capability enables the AI to refine its strategies over time. Yet, despite this advancement, the algorithm still required human intervention. Supervisors provided guidance, encouraging the AI to revisit promising areas or strategies it might have overlooked.
