Overhead cameras equipped with machine vision software follow the pigs as they move around the pen, logging their activity patterns and whereabouts. That data is then cross-referenced with infrared temperature readings to estimate whether an animal is healthy or showing signs of illness.

Voice recognition adds another layer of monitoring. The system is designed to detect the sound of a pig coughing, which could signal respiratory disease, and to recognize the squeal of a piglet in distress, alerting farmers to potential danger. Alibaba told Chinese tech outlet Synced that this feature alone could reduce piglet mortality by three percent, and that sows could produce an additional three piglets per year, cutting financial losses for farmers.

The partnership brings together Dekon Group, a major pig farming corporation, and Tequ Group, a feed manufacturer, alongside Alibaba's cloud computing arm. The companies are exploring how the AI system can be integrated into daily farm operations, though they have not disclosed the scale of the pilot or a timeline for broader rollout.

Why This Matters for China's Pork Industry

Pork is a staple protein in China, and the industry's efficiency directly affects food prices and rural livelihoods. The AI monitoring system addresses several pain points: preventing piglets from being crushed by their mothers, identifying sows that are past their breeding prime, and containing disease outbreaks before they spread through a herd. If the technology proves effective, it could offer a template for other livestock operations in the country.

Yet the broader impact on farm employment remains a question. The system's ability to automate tasks that currently require manual labor could reduce the need for farmhands, a concern that has accompanied the rise of AI in agriculture worldwide. Whether ET Brain will be adopted beyond the pilot farms is still unclear, but the involvement of major industry players suggests the technology is being taken seriously.
