Denmark's wind turbines generated 140% of the nation's electricity needs during the early hours of Friday, according to real-time data from the country's transmission system operator, Energinet. The surplus was largely exported to neighboring countries through interconnectors, underscoring the growing role of wind power in the Nordic energy mix.
The milestone was recorded on Energinet's public dashboard, which tracks renewable generation minute by minute. By 3 a.m. Friday, strong winds pushed output to 140% of demand, up from 116% earlier in the day. Notably, the wind farms were not operating at their full 4.8 gigawatt capacity during the peak, suggesting the potential for even higher output under optimal conditions.
Of the excess power, 80% was shared equally between Germany and Norway, where it can be stored in hydropower reservoirs for later use. Sweden absorbed the remaining fifth, highlighting the effectiveness of cross-border grid connections in balancing renewable energy fluctuations.
Capacity Growth Outpacing Targets
The surge in wind farm installations across Denmark has accelerated the country's transition to renewable energy. According to Kees van der Leun, chief commercial officer at the energy consultancy Ecofys, Denmark could be generating half of its electricity from renewable sources well before the official 2020 target. This projection is based on the current pace of wind capacity additions, which have consistently exceeded expectations.
Denmark has long been a pioneer in wind energy, with ambitious goals to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy independence. The latest figures reinforce the viability of wind as a primary power source, even in a relatively small grid.
