In a discovery that reshapes the timeline of human prehistory, scientists announced Wednesday that fossils unearthed at Jebel Irhoud, Morocco, belong to Homo sapiens and are approximately 300,000 years old. The find, reported in two new studies, pushes the known origins of our species back by more than 100,000 years and challenges the long-held assumption that modern humans first emerged in a single East African cradle.
Until now, the oldest accepted Homo sapiens fossils, found in Ethiopia, dated to about 195,000 years ago. The Moroccan remains, which include skull bones, teeth, and stone tools, suggest that early members of our lineage were present across Africa much earlier than previously thought. The site, a former barite mine, has yielded a wealth of material that researchers say offers an unprecedented glimpse into the physical appearance and behavior of our ancient ancestors.
One of the most striking findings is the facial similarity between these early humans and ourselves. Despite significant differences in brain structure—early Homo sapiens had elongated, less globular braincases—their faces bear a strong resemblance to modern human faces. This suggests that facial features evolved early in our lineage, while the brain underwent later changes to reach its current form.
“We did not evolve from a single cradle of mankind somewhere in East Africa,” said paleoanthropologist Phillipp Gunz, co-author of the studies, in an interview with The New York Times. Gunz and his colleagues argue that the Jebel Irhoud fossils indicate a more complex, pan-African origin for our species, with populations across the continent contributing to the emergence of Homo sapiens.
Rethinking the 'Cradle of Humanity'
The Jebel Irhoud site, located about 100 kilometers west of Marrakesh, has been known to scientists since the 1960s, but the new excavations and modern dating techniques have revealed the true antiquity of the remains. The findings, published in the journal Nature, are based on analyses of the fossils and the surrounding sediment, using methods that date the material to 300,000 years ago.
This discovery not only extends the age of our species but also raises questions about how and where modern humans evolved. The traditional narrative, which placed the origin of Homo sapiens in East Africa around 200,000 years ago, now appears incomplete. Instead, the evidence suggests that early humans were widespread across the continent, with regional populations evolving in tandem.
For paleoanthropologists, the Moroccan fossils are a reminder that the story of human evolution is far from settled. “This is not just an extension of the timeline,” Gunz noted. “It changes our understanding of the evolutionary processes that shaped us.”
The discovery also underscores the importance of North Africa in the human story—a region often overlooked in favor of East Africa. The Jebel Irhoud remains, with their combination of ancient and modern features, offer a unique window into a pivotal moment in our deep past.
