The French army's prestigious officer academy, École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, recently integrated a four-legged robot into its training maneuvers, but the machine's performance fell short of expectations when it lost power mid-exercise and required manual transport by soldiers.
The robot, named Spot and manufactured by Boston Dynamics, was part of a two-day drill that also involved other robotic systems. According to the French newspaper Ouest-France, the exercise simulated the capture of a crossroads, defensive operations during both day and night, and an urban combat scenario. Spot was reportedly used for reconnaissance duties during these activities.
However, a photograph published by the newspaper shows soldiers carrying the inert robot, confirming that it ran out of battery during the exercise. This incident, while perhaps an isolated technical hiccup, offers a tangible glimpse into the operational challenges that military robots still face in field conditions.
The French military's use of Spot did not come as a complete surprise to Boston Dynamics, though the company's initial response suggested a lack of awareness. Michael Perry, the firm's vice president of business development, told The Verge that the company was learning about the exercise alongside the public, stating, "We're not clear on the exact scope of this engagement." After the story was published, a Boston Dynamics spokesperson clarified that the company was indeed aware that the French military was testing Spot, but not of this specific training event.
This is not the first time Spot has been deployed in a public-facing role. In February, the robot was seen patrolling streets in New York City as part of a police department initiative. That deployment, like the military exercise, drew attention to the expanding use of robotics in law enforcement and defense contexts.
Oversight and Ethical Boundaries
The incident raises questions about the oversight of robot deployments. Boston Dynamics' terms and conditions explicitly prohibit using Spot "to harm or intimidate any person or animal, as a weapon, or to enable any weapon." Yet the company's initial unawareness of the French exercise highlights a potential gap in monitoring how its products are used in the field.
Perry defended the military use of robotics in general, telling The Verge, "We think that the military, to the extent that they do use robotics to take people out of harm's way, we think that's a perfectly valid use of the technology." This statement underscores a nuanced stance: while the company supports protective applications, it draws a line at weaponization.
The French army's adoption of Spot is part of a broader trend of militaries experimenting with unmanned ground vehicles. These robots offer potential advantages in reconnaissance and logistics, reducing risks to human soldiers. However, the battery failure during the drill serves as a reminder that the technology is not yet fully mature for all operational environments.
