Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge on Tuesday announced the Earthshot Prize, a multimillion-pound initiative intended to produce at least 50 solutions to major environmental problems by 2030. The program will focus on challenges related to climate, air pollution, and fresh water supply.
"The earth is at a tipping point," William said in a statement, "and we face a stark choice: either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet or we remember our unique power as human beings and our continual ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve."
According to the Earthshot Prize website, the project will hold several events to lay out a series of challenges. Then, every year for 10 years, it will award five people or groups a prize to support their efforts. Sir David Attenborough described the initiative as "the most prestigious environmental prize in history."
"People can achieve great things," William added. "And the next ten years presents us with one of our greatest tests — a decade of change to repair the Earth."
The announcement did not specify the exact monetary value of the prizes or the full list of challenges. The Guardian reported on the launch, noting the prize's aim to tackle the climate crisis.
