Global Study Finds Earth’s Life-Support Systems Under Severe Strain

An international consortium of scientists has completed the first holistic health assessment of Earth’s interconnected life-support systems, and the diagnosis is stark: six of the nine critical planetary boundaries have been crossed, pushing the planet “well outside the safe operating space for humanity.” The findings, published in the journal Science Advances, represent a comprehensive audit of the natural thresholds that have allowed human civilization to flourish for millennia.

The concept of planetary boundaries, developed by the Stockholm University Resilience Centre, defines the margins within which humanity can continue to develop and thrive. These nine boundaries include biosphere integrity, climate change, ocean acidification, land-system change, and freshwater use, among others. The new assessment, led by Katherine Richardson, a professor at the University of Copenhagen, marks the first time all nine have been evaluated together.

Richardson told The Guardian that the results are a cause for concern, not a death sentence. “We know for certain that humanity can thrive under the conditions that have been here for 10,000 years,” she said. “We don’t know that we can thrive under major, dramatic alterations [and] humans impacts on the Earth system as a whole are increasing as we speak.” She compared the planet’s state to a human with high blood pressure: “It doesn’t indicate a certain heart attack, but it does greatly raise the risk.”

The study, which synthesized data from more than 2,000 previous studies, found that some boundaries were breached long ago. The biosphere integrity boundary—considered a “core boundary” alongside climate change—was crossed as early as the 1800s. Freshwater systems followed in the early 1900s, and the climate change threshold was breached in the 1980s. Most alarming, all four boundaries related to the biological world are now at or near the highest risk level.

Despite the grim overall picture, the assessment offers a glimmer of hope: the ozone layer remains within healthy limits. This is particularly notable given that the ozone was once on the brink of collapse, and international efforts to reverse the damage have proven effective. The recovery of the ozone layer demonstrates that coordinated human action can restore planetary health.

Richardson emphasized that the findings are not a prediction of imminent doom. “It doesn’t indicate a certain heart attack,” she reiterated, “but it does greatly raise the risk.” The path forward, she suggests, lies in reducing human impacts on the Earth system—a challenge that will require global cooperation and policy changes.

The study’s authors hope that this “health check” will serve as a wake-up call, prompting governments and industries to take the necessary steps to bring humanity back within safe boundaries. As Richardson noted, the window for action is narrowing, but the ozone example shows that recovery is possible when science and policy align.
