In the vast expanse of the Mojave Desert, a team of architects, engineers, and designers is turning science fiction into tangible form: 3D-printed prototypes of habitats intended for future Mars colonies. The project, led by architect Vera Mulyani through her organization Mars City Design, has moved from concept to construction, with the first scale models now taking shape at a test site operated by the Reaction Research Society.
The initiative gained momentum after a successful Kickstarter campaign raised $30,382, enough to fund the creation of three to-scale habitat prototypes. These structures are being built at the Reaction Research Society's test area in the Mojave, a location chosen for its Mars-like arid conditions and its history of rocketry experimentation.
Mulyani, who describes herself as a “Marschitect,” envisions the project as a “macro to micro” approach. The team first considers how an entire Martian city would function as an integrated system, then breaks that down into individual habitat units. The long-term goal is to establish a base with four people on Mars, eventually scaling up to a city of 1,000 inhabitants.
To refine the designs, Mars City Design has organized a workshop at the University of Southern California (USC) in September. The event will bring together a select group of international engineers, designers, and architects. Notable attendees include Jim Erickson, project manager for NASA's Mars Exploration Rover; Madhu Thangavelu, a professor at the Viterbi School of Engineering; and Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, among others.
The workshop will also review the 25 design entries submitted to the Mars City Design competition, from which three finalists have been shortlisted for prototype development. Among the proposed concepts are:
- Neurosynthesis: an urban settlement featuring a closed river system and an artificial waterfall on Mars.
- Project Dandelion: an autonomous habitat that utilizes regolith to generate oxygen, water, energy, and nutrition sustainably.
- Vertical Farms: agricultural systems designed to reduce dependence on resupply missions from Earth.
- Instant Structure: a laser-based technology for rapid construction, potentially applicable to disaster relief or post-conflict rebuilding on Earth.
Mulyani sees the Mars project as an opportunity to apply long-term thinking to urban planning, a lesson she believes was overlooked in the development of Earth's cities. By designing for a closed, self-sustaining environment, the team hopes to create blueprints that could inform sustainable living both on other planets and on our own.
The Mojave Desert prototypes represent a tangible step toward making Mars habitation a reality, blending architectural innovation with space exploration expertise. As the September workshop approaches, the selected designs will be further refined, with the most promising concepts moving closer to actual deployment on the Red Planet.
